The need for post drilling drifting
Post drilling drifting is necessary to insure against pipe blockages obstructing a successful liner or screen setting. If debris has become trapped in the pipe it can prevent balls, cement plugs and retrieval tools from arriving. Although the risk of blockage may be low, the resulting cost over-run can be huge, making post drilling drifting a necessary inconvenience at this point.
The Drift Catcher drifts quicker and is used to remove the risks associated with conventional post drilling drifting methods, such as manual and passive drifting.

How
the Drift Catcher system works
The Drift Catcher system is an automated version of the manual drifting
process, where a catcher sub is positioned below the drill pipe but above
the BHA ready for use at TD. To save drifting stand by stand out of hole
a drift will be pumped through the string to verify the bore is clear.
A choked drift is supplied with the sub. ID's and OD's are selected to match the specifications in the program in the well planning stage.
After TD the drift is pumped quickly into place and within a few minutes lands in the catcher, confirmed by a positive pressure indication at surface. Unlike manual drifting all engineers with access to the logs/reports can verify the good drift, even if they were not on shift at the time.
For additional security the crew can also check
the drift is stored in the sub when it is pulled from hole.
